Our History

Introduction

The story of EDENTAO-CEAEC begins in 1997, in Lyon, with a simple but powerful idea: to create a space where the wisdom of Chinese energetic arts and the Tao could be experienced, practiced, and passed on. Over more than two decades, our association has evolved from a small circle of dedicated practitioners into a well-established community that continues to grow while remaining true to its roots.

This is our history — a journey shaped by passion, dedication, and a belief in the transformative power of the Tao.

The Early Years (1997–2000)

When EDENTAO-CEAEC was founded, resources for learning Chinese energetic arts in Lyon were scarce. The few opportunities that existed were often limited to martial applications or fragmented workshops without a clear connection to the underlying philosophy.

Our founders — themselves long-time students of the Tao — wanted to offer something different: a place where physical practice and philosophical study were inseparable. They began with small group sessions in modest spaces, focusing on Qi Gong and Tai Chi, while also introducing participants to Taoist texts and meditation techniques.

These early years were marked by slow but steady growth. Word of mouth brought in curious newcomers, many of whom stayed because they found in our classes a rare combination of discipline, warmth, and depth.

Building a Foundation (2000–2010)

As interest grew, so did the scope of our activities. We moved into a more permanent location in Lyon, allowing us to offer regular classes throughout the week. We also began hosting weekend workshops, which provided time for deeper exploration of specific techniques or themes.

During this period, our teaching approach matured. We refined our curriculum, ensuring that beginners had a clear path for progression, while more advanced students were challenged to expand their understanding and skills. We also began to attract participants from outside Lyon, who travelled to attend our events and seminars.

These years also marked the start of our collaborations with guest instructors from other regions and countries. This exchange of knowledge enriched our own practice and reinforced our commitment to authenticity and quality in teaching.

Growth and Recognition (2010–2020)

By the 2010s, EDENTAO-CEAEC had become a recognized name within the local and regional community of Chinese energetic arts practitioners. Our classes regularly filled, and our workshops often reached capacity.

We diversified our offerings to include not only Qi Gong and Tai Chi but also dedicated meditation sessions, breathing exercises, and expanded discussions on Taoist philosophy. Our events attracted a wide range of people: young adults seeking balance in their busy lives, retirees looking to maintain vitality, and professionals in fields such as healthcare or education who saw the value of these practices in their own work.

In addition to our regular activities, we began organizing cultural events celebrating Chinese New Year and seasonal changes according to the Taoist calendar. These gatherings strengthened our sense of community and provided opportunities for members to share their skills and experiences.

Resilience and Adaptation (2020–2023)

Like many organizations, we faced unexpected challenges during the global pandemic. In-person classes and workshops were temporarily suspended, forcing us to adapt quickly.

While our preference has always been for direct, face-to-face teaching, we explored alternative ways to stay connected with our members. Some classes were adapted for small, socially distanced groups, while others were shared online through simple video conferencing tools.

This period tested our resilience but also reaffirmed our community’s strength. Members stayed engaged, supported each other, and expressed gratitude for the stability our association provided during uncertain times.

Where We Are Today

Now, with more than 25 years of history, EDENTAO-CEAEC continues to thrive. Our association remains grounded in the same purpose that inspired its founding: to offer a space where anyone can explore the Tao through authentic practice and study.

Our current activities include:

  • Weekly classes in Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and meditation.
  • In-depth workshops on specific techniques or philosophical themes.
  • Seasonal celebrations aligned with Taoist traditions.
  • Occasional cultural and educational events to deepen understanding of Chinese heritage.

We remain committed to keeping class sizes manageable to ensure personal attention, maintaining affordable fees, and preserving the welcoming atmosphere that has always been our hallmark.

Lessons from Our Journey

Looking back, several themes stand out in our history:

  1. Patience – Growth has never been rushed. We have always preferred slow, steady development to rapid expansion without depth.
  2. Adaptability – The Tao teaches flexibility, and our ability to adapt to changing circumstances has kept us strong.
  3. Community – Our members are not just students; they are the lifeblood of our association. The friendships and mutual support within EDENTAO-CEAEC have been as important as the classes themselves.
  4. Commitment to Authenticity – We have never compromised the integrity of our teachings, even when it meant taking the longer, more demanding path.

Looking Forward

Our history is the foundation upon which we build our future. The experiences of the past — both challenges and triumphs — guide our decisions today. We aim to continue deepening our knowledge, welcoming new members, and keeping the Tao alive in our community.

If our history shows anything, it is that lasting growth comes from dedication, mutual respect, and an unwavering focus on the values that matter most. As we move forward, we carry these lessons with us, confident that they will serve us for the next 25 years and beyond.
